Tree pruning or trimming should always be done by a certified arborist.  Too many supposed “tree guys” consider cutting a bunch of easy to reach branches tree trimming. Others cut everything they can get to thinking “the more I cut the more I get paid”! They often have no clue what they are doing and do more harm than good. Often, they  make improper pruning cuts resulting in ir-repairable damage and the branches they cut off will quickly grow right back in a few short years which is a waste of your money.

A certified arborist has a specific plan and goal for your tree depending on species and setting. We have a good reason for every cut and know through experience and training how each cut will affect the tree in the near and distant future. Click here for more reasons to hire an arborist. Proper tree pruning is done to ensure a tree grows correctly so it is more resistant to disease and storm damage for years to come. A properly pruned tree will require less maintenance and thrive more allowing you to enjoy it for longer and worry about it less.

Young trees should be pruned to promote good structure and to get them off to a good start.  Trees with good structure will survive longer and require less maintenance throughout the life of the tree.

Mature trees should be inspected for defects and have them addressed. They are often thinned to allow more light penetration and wind flow through the canopy to reduce the wind load. Cleaning is the most common form of pruning.  This involves removing dead or broken branches, removing weak branch connections (co-dominant stems), removing rubbing or interfering branches and ensuring proper branch sizing and distribution. Crown “raising” involves removing the lower limbs to allow clearance for signs, sidewalks, buildings, wires and other objects nearby.  Crown reduction refers to reducing the size of the entire tree. This is done by removing specific branches back to a lateral branch to make a tree smaller overall and stronger thereby more resistant to failure.  This is the alternative to topping which is considered harmful to trees and sets them up for future failure as well as being unsightly!
