When a tree is in declining state of health it may need to be removed. Trees with dead branches at the tips are a first sign of trouble.  If caught early enough fertilizing and vertical mulching can sometimes save them. Depending on condition and species the decision must be made to try to nurse it back to health or to cut your losses and get a new tree growing sooner. Large spruce trees are often in this condition when they get very large. They become unsightly and an increased liability and are better off removed and replaced.

Mature trees near newly constructed homes often begin to decline after completion because their root zone has become heavily compacted.  This can be treated with some success but must be done early.  If you have a new home and value your trees consulting an arborist early can ensure their survival.  If you are having a new home constructed near trees an arborist can assess which trees are best saved and provide a plan to protect them.
